I think its about time i cleared my credit files up, its been 4 years since i went BR, and i cant get a capital one card, a flybe card or even a upgrqade bank account !! It surprises me , how person to person BR is different, some people like me cant get a thing for years after, some people get credit cards after a year ??

Anyway , what do i do, when i dont have any paper work or anything in relation to these debts anymore, i have seen the template letter which i will send, but i dont have alot of info for them to go with it >? also do i send a copy of discharge letter, i was discharged 2006

Thanks
B x

Have you ordered your files from Experian and Equifax and that other one whose name I have forgotten because I didn't bother with them? Once you've got them you have to go through following TW's instructions, e.g. looking to see if the date for defaulting tallies with your bankruptcy date and whether it is marked satisfied or partially satisfied (either will do). If you need to correct something the hard part for you will be getting a reference so you can write the stroppy letter. The OR's office might be able to help.

I don't know about Halifax (I wouldn't touch them with the proverbial bargepole!) but I know Nationwide and the Co-op won't upgrade whilst the BR is still showing on your credit files.

Sarah was naming that last company I couldn't remember.

I went bankrupt just under three and a half years ago and still can't get credit but the Nationwide make you wait the full 6 years. My credit files have taken ages to clean up. I'm still dealing with RBS who just don't reply but I have now complained to the the Information Commissioner.

Ok so clean up files... wait another 2 years and finger x'd.
I wonder why some people can get credit after 1yr tho ? surely BR is BR??.... I got a mortgage, striaght after discharge, i recently enquired about getting another mortgage and 3 main lenders wont lend to anyone who has EVER been BR including the one im now with !!And the broker seems to think this is the route alot of lenders are going :-( even if i had a 40% deposit ( which i dont ) !! madness !

Its strange since i have gone BR 4 people i know have too !!! its so common these days that surely this rule will be relaxed eventually ?

Hi there brooke,

I had been discharged for 4 years, before I embarked on the task of cleaning up the files.

I too had applied for various account upgrades, the coop even phoning and sending me letters, telling me that I was eligible for an upgrade, to be then turned down, because my files were in dissaray.

I started cleaning them up in September, and it is still ongoing now. I have to report the RBS to the ICO, as they just have not responded to my request.

With most of the debts marked as settled or partial settled, I then went back to the coop, a couple of weeks ago, and still got turned down, even though I have run the account perfectly. If there is bankruptcy on your file, then I reckon you don't have a cat in hells chance.

Good luck to you in cleaning your files

I think you have to wait 6 years before you can get a full account with all the banks. I haven't heard of anyone getting an upgrade before then?

Hi Opsins

Although it can be difficult, it can be done.

Some poeple had the clever idea of applying for new bank accounts immediately after going bankrupt and before any BR entries were put on their credit files. I wasn't one of them.

I got a full bank account with Abbey after having a basic account with them for just over 12 months and making sure that I never had any DD/SO refused etc.

By that time, I had also been Discharged for 3 years and I had also completed the clean-up of all my credit files i.e. old balances showing as satisfied or partially settled and all default dates marked correctly.

I admit it can be difficult but it can be done before the 6 years are up. :D
